Nexperia announced the addition of two ideal diode ICs to its expanding power device product line. NID5100-Q100 has been certified for automotive applications, while NID5100 is suitable for traditional industrial and consumer applications.

Ideal diodes are devices based on metal oxide semiconductor (mosfet), which have significantly reduced forward voltage drop compared to traditional diodes. Therefore, in systems where power efficiency is crucial, they become the best alternative to conventional diodes.

The NID5100 and NID5100-Q100 ideal diodes are packaged in a compact TSSP6/SOT363-2 pin plastic package, with dimensions of 2.1mm x 1.25mm x 0.95mm. The excellent electrical performance of these ideal diodes can have advantages in various applications, including smart meters, fire/safety sensors, battery powered wearable devices, and automotive remote information processing systems.

NID5100 is an ideal diode based on PMOS technology, in which the gate voltage of the internal MOSFET limits the voltage difference between the anode and cathode to eight to ten times lower than the forward voltage of an equivalent Schottky diode. In addition to low forward voltage drop, this MOSFET based ideal diode also significantly reduces reverse DC leakage current, which can be reduced to 100 times compared to traditional Schottky diodes.

Compared to other competitive ideal diodes, NID5100 can connect multiple power sources in an "OR" configuration while maintaining reverse polarity protection. In addition, it has an extremely fast response time, ensuring seamless power conversion. The perfect diode developed by Nexperia also has several additional advantages, including a 31 mV (typical) forward regulated voltage, the ability to handle up to 1.5 A forward current, and automatic switching between "or" configured power supplies.

Its operating voltage range is from 1.2 V to 5.5 V, with extremely low current consumption. The shutdown current at 3.3 V VIN is 170 nA, and the static current is 240 nA. In addition, the diode also has reverse voltage protection, with an absolute maximum rated value of -6 V, and an output status indication (ST). These features make it a reliable and efficient choice in power management applications.
